In a shocking turn of events, Singapore’s anti-corruption drive has taken a significant leap forward as the investigation into corrupt practices expands its scope to include one of the country’s prominent businessmen, Ong Beng Seng.

Through his successful forays into real estate, hotel, and other industries, he has amassed a sizeable fortune. Ong’s name has long been linked to success and philanthropy because he has served as the chairman of several illustrious businesses and has received countless awards. In addition to other opulent buildings in Singapore, London, and Bangkok, the business owns the Four Seasons hotels in the Maldives and Malaysia.
His inclusion in the corruption inquiry, however, has generated controversy and shocked citizens across the country. He is one of the wealthiest businessmen in the city state, a prominent member of the club of Formula One franchise owners and has held a position of influence in Southeast Asia for more than 40 years.
According to the nation’s anti-corruption body, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), Ong, managing director of Hotel Properties Limited, and Minister of Transport S. Iswaran were both detained last Tuesday. Later, the two individuals were released on bail.
Only a few days after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong claimed to have ordered the transport minister to take a leave of absence, Ong’s situation came to light. Ministers are rarely the subject of corruption investigations in Singapore, because officials are highly compensated to deter corruption. According to the government, ministers received an annual salary of approximately 1.1 million Singapore dollars, or roughly $834,000.
