Security patches under for zero-day bug issued by Apple

Apple has issued an update for its devices: iPhone, iPad and Watch in an effort to patch vulnerabilities that have actively been hacked. These security updates are as follows iOS 14.2.2 and iPadOS 14.2.2. This also covers a patch as iOS 12.5.2 for older devices. The Watch updates are 7.3.3. All these updates have been released on March 26, 2021.

Apple says that it conducts an investigation after which it discloses security issues. It confirms security issues or discusses such issues only after releases or patches have been made available for its customers.

Apple also advises its customers to keep their devices up to date so that they maintain their devices security whether it is an iPhone, an iPad, a Watch or any other device.

The tech giant mentioned that the vulnerabilities were tracked down by security researchers who work at Google’s Project Zero. The company believes that the bug, found in WebKit, may have been actively hacked. Webkit is the browser engine that powers the Safari browser. Safari is used across all the devices manufactured by Apple.

The company has not provided details about

  • who the hackers are
  • which users have been hacked
  • who has been the target – a small subset or a large number of users

The Apple operating system has been under attack, more than twice this year. Apple has released a “security only” update for the third time in the first three months of the year, according to TechCrunch for fixing vulnerabilities under active attack.

In early March, the company had released updates to fix security issues in WebKit.
