Syria Re-Admitted into Arab League after 2011 Suspension amidst Mixed Reactions

On Sunday, after more than a decade of suspension, the Arab League readmitted Syria, cementing a regional effort to normalize ties with President Bashar al-Assad. The decision stated that Syria could resume its participation in Arab League meetings and called for an end to the crises brought on by the country’s civil conflict, including the exodus of refugees to nearby nations and drug trafficking throughout the region.

According to analysts, the Arab League’s decision to readmit Syria, after 12 years of exclusion, carries significant symbolic importance for Damascus. It reflects a broader regional realignment and highlights the diminishing role of the United States. However, this move is unlikely to immediately result in the reconstruction funds sought by Syrian President Bashar Assad, nor is it expected to address the concerns of Syria’s neighbors, such as the return of refugees or efforts to combat drug trafficking.

Despite the absence of a resolution to Syria’s ongoing civil war, which has entered its 13th year, the country is being reintegrated into the Arab community. The protracted conflict, which has claimed nearly half a million lives and displaced millions, has defied numerous mediation attempts, reports say.

President Bashar al-Assad owes his survival primarily to the unwavering backing of Iran and Russia, who have been more committed to his preservation than Western and Middle Eastern nations have been to his downfall, reports say. Geopolitical shifts in the Middle East have now allegedly bolstered his position, as major regional powers, including his Shiite Islamist allies in Tehran and his Sunni rival Saudi Arabia, prioritize reconciliation over conflict.

The country’s readmittance precedes a forthcoming summit in Saudi Arabia on May 19, which President Bashar al-Assad may attend. The United States and the United Kingdom have reportedly disapproved of the development, although it remains uncertain if Assad will participate in the summit, as Damascus has not yet confirmed his attendance.

In return for ending Syria’s isolation, Arab states have reportedly asked for concrete action to address the trafficking of the highly lucrative and addictive drug captagon across Syria’s borders towards the Gulf. To exert pressure on Assad during his regional engagements, several high-ranking Syrian officials and Assad’s relatives have recently been subjected to sanctions by the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. Syria agreed to cooperate in combating this trafficking at a meeting in Jordan on May 1.
