The patient received antiretroviral medication (ART) after being diagnosed, which reduced their system’s viral load.
A stem cell transplant from a female donor with whom they matched was given to the patient as part of their cancer treatment. They received this transplant almost two years after being told they had cancer and five years after learning they had HIV.
An alleged mutation in the female donor confers resistance to HIV infection.
Even after ceasing his HIV medication four years ago, experts today reported that the Dusseldorf patient still has no virus in his body.
