Amazon (AMZN) will buy clean and renewable energy from a solar project in Maryland. The Garrett County project is built on a brownfield that used to be a 120-year-old coal mine. The solar project will power Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers, fulfillment centers and physical stores. It is the largest solar farm in Maryland and will also supply clean power to local communities, as well as add jobs.
Developer Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) is converting the coal mine land to a 170-megawatt of direct current project in Maryland County. About 200 people will be employed and the project is expected to be fully operational in the second quarter of 2025, according to the company.
CPV will be adding 300,000 solar panels on the brownfield site. The completed project at the former Arch Coal mine could help the region avoid over 133,000 tons of carbon dioxide. This is similar to removing 26,000 cars off the roads and highways each year.
Developers find brownfield sites to be attractive as they are already connected to power grids, although building on reclaimed land is challenging. Federal funds are also available under the 2021 infrastructure law and they can also avail a 10 percent tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act.
Amazon is planning to use two farms for its huge power consumption in Maryland. It has 11 fulfillment centers and sortation centers and 16 delivery stations in Maryland. It also has an air hub in the state. Amazon has renewables projects in 21 states in the U.S., and in 26 countries around the world.
The giant retailer is expecting to power all its operations with renewable energy by 2025. The company also said that its renewables portfolio that includes solar and wind projects had increased to 479, to date in 2023 from a total of 401 projects last year. It said that its renewable energy portfolio can power 6.7 million homes in the nation.
