A 35-year-old New York woman was detained on suspicion of faking a deed to take possession of an elderly woman’s home, but she claims the house was given to her as a token of appreciation for taking care of the woman.

On Friday, 35-year-old Aurelia Soogea appeared in court in Nassau County, Long Island, and entered a not-guilty plea to forgery and theft. She is charged with spending $10 to change the deed to the $350,000 house belonging to her mother’s neighbor into her name.

Rosemarie Mika, a resident of Long Island, claims her neighbor stole her house. Mika claimed she was shocked to learn she was no longer the owner of her $350,000 house in a letter from the Nassau County Clerk. Mika contacted the police and a legal team right away.

Soogea is accused by the prosecution of forging signatures on the house’s deeds to change ownership. According to sources, Soogea has been charged with grand larceny. The house’s documentation demonstrates that title was transferred for $10. Soogea claimed Mika had transferred the home’s ownership to her, in appreciation for the care Soogea had provided to Mika.

Lawrence Carra, attorney for Soogea, stated that his client supposedly assisted the woman and was given ownership of the house by Mika. The two ladies do not, according to Mika’s counsel, have a relationship, and Soogea did not perform any services for Mika.

Soogea was ordered by the Court to stop speaking to Mika and was given until Thursday to appear in court.

The legal conflict occurs at a time when squatting incidents have increased dramatically in some regions of the nation recently. Squatters are a “growing problem” in New York, specifically, according to a state lawyer who suggested citizens “treat your properties like a business” to help deter squatters.
