On Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that Listeria, a food borne disease was traced to deli meats and cheeses in six states across the nation. The CDC recommends that certain people including pregnant women, young children, those are 65 years old and above and those who are immunocompromised avoid these foods as they have a higher risk of infection.
The Listeria outbreak across the U.S. has made at least 16 people sick. One person died, while a pregnant women who was infected with Listeria lost her baby. Thirteen of those who were infected were hospitalized. Although pregnant people may exhibit mild symptoms, it can cause severe illness in newborns or even death. Some pregnant people might deliver still born or premature babies.
The CDC also said that the number of those who were infected was most probably higher as some people can recover from the infection, without medical treatment.

People who speak Russian and are of Eastern European descent have been disproportionately affected by the bacteria. The CDC said that it was investigating the reasons why so many people from a particular population have been affected by the bacteria.
A Listeria infection can have the following symptoms:
vomiting
nausea
persistent fever
loss of balance
convulsions
muscle aches
neck stiffness and
severe headaches.
Since the infection is similar to other bacterial or viral infections, it can only be diagnosed after a specific laboratory test. It can also take a long time to develop symptoms, from two weeks to a period of up to 70 days, which makes it difficult to pinpoint an infection as Listeria.
The CDC said that anyone who was at a higher risk of getting infected by Listeria should avoid eating deli meats and cheeses. It said that such foods should not be consumed “unless it is reheated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit or until steaming hot.”
