His comment led to a frenzy on social media including fans and followers commenting that he had denied his Blackness. In an interview, the 50-year-old London-born actor had told Esquire that he had “stopped describing” himself “as a Black actor” when he realized that it put him “in a box.” He later told The Guardian that this comment had led to several reactions and responses on social media which he described as a “conflict incubator.”
In the same interview, the celebrity actor of The Wire added, “Me saying I don’t like to call myself a Black actor is my prerogative. That’s me not you.” He also asked how could anyone say that he was “denying” his “Blackness.”
In the same interview with The Guardian, he questioned, “On what grounds? Did you hear that? Where am I denying it? And what for?”
The celebrity actor also added, “It’s just plain stupid. Whatever.”
Idris Elba also spoke about the rumors that he would be cast as the next James Bond and how close it came to him being cast as the iconic British Spy. When asked about discussions on the possible casting he said he could not speak for them but from his perspective there had “never been any sort of truth to any of it.”
