Jeff Beck, who was born in 1944 in Wallington, south London, began playing the guitar as a teenager after singing in a church choir as a child. On Page’s recommendation, he went on to replace Eric Clapton in the Yardbirds, but left after 20 months.

Representatives confirmed on Wednesday that legendary guitarist Jeff Beck died after “suddenly” contracting bacterial meningitis. He was 78.
On Twitter, his family confirmed his death, writing: “We share the news of Jeff Beck’s death with deep and profound sadness on behalf of his family. He died peacefully yesterday after contracting bacterial meningitis unexpectedly. His family requests privacy as they mourn this tragic loss.

Beck went on to front his own band, the Jeff Beck Group, after playing with the Yardbirds. He pioneered jazz-rock, experimenting with fuzz and distortion effects, and paved the way for heavier subgenres such as psychedelic rock and heavy metal. The eight-time Grammy winner had his fingers insured for £700,000 each.

Genesis’ lead guitarist, Steve Hackett, also said on Twitter that Beck was a “powerful influence on myself and many others.”

Another musician who tweeted their condolences was Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones, who wrote: “I’m going to miss him terribly. I’m sending my condolences to Sandra, his family, and everyone who loved him. I’d like to thank him for our early days in the Jeff Beck Group, when we were conquering America.”

Following the news of Beck’s death, musicians began posting on Twitter. Tommy Iommi, guitarist for Black Sabbath, stated that he was “”Jeff was such a nice person and an outstanding iconic, genius guitar player – there will never be another Jeff Beck,” he said of the “very sad” news. His playing was exceptional and distinctively brilliant! He will be greatly missed.”
Rolling Stone magazine ranked the rock legend fifth on its list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.”
