The Food and Drug Administrative (FDA) has taken nearly six years to propose “healthy” guidelines leading to mixed responses as nutrition experts laud their efforts while food companies blast them for too strict guidelines. Congress had asked the agency to come up with guidelines more than a decade ago, with warning labels on an excess of unhealthy ingredients in packaged foods. Countries such as Mexico, Chile and Israel have stringent guidelines including larger warning about excess of sugar, fat, or sodium in packaged foods

The FDA has faced immense challenges to set the guidelines and the food industry has responded with a backlash calling its guidelines too strict as the American food industry consists of many companies whose heavily processed foods have excess amounts of fats, sugars, and salt.
According to STAT, some of the food companies that have called out the FDA’s “healthy” food guidelines include the following:
Cereal companies such as General Mills, Kellogg’s, and others
Pasta companies such as Barilla and De Cecco
SNAC International including Frito-Lay and Utz
Pickle Packers International
Frozen food maker Healthy Choice
Yogurt maker Chobani
Granola Bar Company Kind
Consumer Brands Association some of whose members include Hostess, Mondelez, General Mills, Pepsi, Coke and others
The National Confectioners Association whose members include Hershey’s, Haribo, Tootsie Roll and others.
According to STAT, those who have applauded the FDA for finally making a “healthy” guidelines proposal include the following:

The American Society for Nutrition
The Association of State Public Health Nutritionists and
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Some of the above groups have indicated that the FDA could go further as some of the agency’s rules might be gamed by some food companies and unhealthy foods might bear a healthy label.
Senior policy scientist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest Eva Greenthal told the outlet that it was “baffling to see the amount of pushback” and that the FDA had to “focus on its mission to protect public health and resist pressure from industry, whose only mission is to profit even at the cost of our health.”
