The “Godfather of Black Music” Clarence Avant and his wife Jacqueline’s mansion in Beverly Hills was targeted by home invasion burglars in the early hours of Wednesday morning, when they were home. The robbers broke into the $7 million home in Los Angeles when the couple were in residence and fatally shot 81-year old Jacqueline.

TMZ was the first to report that a person called 911 at around 2.30 a.m. on Wednesday and said that someone had been shot and killed. Beverly Hills police reached a home in the Trousdale Estates nearby. Meanwhile, Jacqueline Avant was rushed to a hospital before the police arrived. She had been shot. She died at the hospital. Clarence was not injured.

A source from the family told TMZ that at least one suspect, the person who shot Jacqueline, was able to enter the house. The number of suspects who were involved in the home invasion is not known. Law enforcement sources told the outlet that there was security at the mansion. A security guard had been shot but he didn’t return fire.

NBCLA received an image of the home which showed that a sliding door was smashed. It appears to be the way through which at least one suspect, the shooter might have entered the mansion.

Jackie and Clarence had been married for 54 years. They have a 53-year old daughter named Nicole Avant. She is married to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos.

Clarence Avant is called the “Godfather of Black Music.” The 90-year old legend had been inducted into the Hall of Fame in October. He wore several labels in his career including

manager
mentor
label owner
concert organizer
event producer
actor
political fund raiser.

According to the IMDb, Jackie was also involved in various activities including the following:

Jackie was the President of a support group that focused on child care. It is called Neighbors of Watts.
She was on UCLA International Student Center’s Board of Directors.
She was the chairperson of NOW membership.
In 1975 she was the entertainment chairperson of the NOW benefit auction and dinner dance.

On Wednesday afternoon, Mark Stainbrook, who is the Beverly Hills Police Chief, said that they have called the death a homicide and the department has begun an investigation into the incident.
