Dr. Fauci and Sen. Rand Paul continue to trade insults on COVID-19

There has been a long-standing battle of words between Dr. Anthony Fauci, considered to be the nation’s top expert on infectious diseases and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who is an ophthalmologist. The eye specialist has been denouncing the diseases expert Dr. Fauci right from the beginning of the pandemic and Dr. Fauci has finally hit back. Both the doctors called each other liars, during a Senate hearing, on Tuesday.

On Friday, Dr. Fauci told Fox News that the discussion about U.S. Wuhan funding and gain of function research was a complicated issue. He said that he was a scientist, and his job was to be a scientist and a health official, and he had fulfilled that job by helping develop vaccines against COVID-19.   He mentioned that these vaccines had saved millions of lives and he didn’t like how all of what has recently been happening has become such a “contentious” issue.

Dr. Fauci also tried to explain the link between researchers in the U.S. and the Wuhan laboratory in China. He reiterated that there wasn’t any “risky research.” He said that the research conducted had received praise by peer review in the U.S. and the scientists who collaborated were well respected scientists.

Earlier, on Tuesday, Senator Rand Paul told Fox News that he wanted to take the matter further. He insisted that Fauci funded “gain of

function” research at the Wuhan lab in China. Gain of function is a method by which viruses are made more lethal and transmissible to study transmissibility and other aspects of the virus.

Paul said that Fauci was lying about whether or not he funded gain of function research and that he should be punished. He said that he would be sending a letter to the Department of Justice asking for a criminal referral as Paul believes Dr. Fauci lied to Congress.

On Tuesday, when Senator Paul referenced a scientific paper from November 17 Dr. Fauci said that he had never lied before the Congress. He added that he wanted to officially say that the Senator did not know what he was talking about. Dr. Fauci also said that “If anybody is lying here, senator, it is you.”
