Elon Musk reinstated conspiracy theorist Alex Jones‘ account on X, and his site InfoWars is also expected to return to the platform X, which was previously called Twitter, on Sunday. The Tesla billionaire who owns X said that a poll he conducted on his platform showed that people wanted Alex Jones back on the platform.
Musk posted a reply on the poll on X that said, “The people have spoken, and so it shall be.” The poll showed that almost two million votes had been cast. It also showed that about 70 percent were in favor of the return of Alex Jones, who had called the Sandy Hook school shooting a conspiracy theory.
In 2022, Alex Jones was asked to pay almost $1.5 billion in damages to family members of the victims of the Sandy Hook school shootings. The conspiracy theorist had falsely claimed that the victims who were shot were actors and that it was a plot by the government to take away guns from Americans. 26 victims were shot at Sandy Hook School, and they included 20 children and six adults.
Many of Alex Jones’ fans responded to his conspiracy theory by harassing family members of the victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting. Journalists have also been harassed by his followers.
Alex Jones was permanently banned from Twitter in 2018. Other major social media platforms, including YouTube and Facebook, also banned the conspiracy theorist.
Elon Musk said that the reinstatement of Alex Jones would be “bad for X financially.” He also said that “principles matter more than money.”
Elon Musk lost a lot of major advertisers when he liked a post that was considered antisemitic on X. He later apologized for the post.
Elon Musk considers himself to be an advocate of free speech. He has reinstated former President Donald Trump, who remains mostly inactive on the platform, as he posts on his social media site. He also reinstated Andrew Tate and Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has also put forth many conspiracy theories and others.
