On Wednesday, a shooter opened fire on two television reporters who were covering a murder near Orlando, Florida, killing one and injuring the other before killing a 9-year-old girl and injuring her mother in a nearby house, according to officials.

A spate of violence that lasted for several hours in a neighborhood just west of Orlando was put to an end by the suspect’s capture on Wednesday afternoon. He is also accused of hurting the girl’s mother and one of the journalist’s coworkers.

According to Orange County Sheriff John Mina, the attacks on the mother and daughter and the TV news crew took place in the Pine Hills neighborhood of Orlando, about a block apart from one another.

19-year-old Keith Melvin is the suspect and is being detained after being charged with murder in connection with the first attack on Wednesday. If they were intended targets is unknown.

A lady in her 20s was killed in a car on Hialeah Street in Orange County in the first shooting, which was reported around 11 a.m. According to Mina, that lady is thought to be familiar with the suspect. After the car had been towed later in the day, the shooter returned to the scene and shot the two Spectrum News 13 journalists who were reporting the woman’s murder, according to Mina.

One of the reporters succumbed to his injuries.

The news station reported without naming either that the other journalist was in serious condition, but was speaking and was anticipated to receive additional treatment at a hospital Wednesday night. The suspect then entered a house on a nearby block and shot a mother and her 9-year-old daughter, the sheriff claimed, following the shooting of the journalists. They were both taken to a hospital, where the mother was listed in critical condition, and the infant passed away.

According to Mina, the suspect had a pistol when he was apprehended and had a long criminal history, including arrests for burglaries, grand theft, aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon, and firearms offenses.

Additionally, investigators are focusing on whether the suspect was aware that the workers of Spectrum News 13 were journalists. The group encouraged all reporters on the ground to be extra cautious and to work even harder to stay safe.
