Just weeks after a mass shooting spree in Monterey Park that left 11 people dead, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved moves to tighten gun laws.
The motion requests that the Treasurer and Tax Collector draft final amendments to the county code regarding business licenses to strengthen the regulation of gun and ammunition dealers in the tributary areas of the county. It also requests that the Department of Regional Planning prepare an ordinance to implement zoning regulations with a 1,000-foot buffer between firearm sellers and “child-sensitive areas.”
Only two of the laws addressed on Tuesday are anticipated to be implemented shortly. One would outlaw the sale of pistols with bullets that are.50 caliber, or half-inch thick, in unincorporated L.A. County. The second would make it illegal for anybody, even those with concealed carry permits, to carry a gun on county property, which includes buildings, parks, and beaches. For police enforcement, there is an exception.
The second would call for home-use firearms to be securely stored in a lockable container or rendered inoperable by the use of a trigger lock. The third would mandate liability insurance for gun owners. County officials have expressed their desire for insurance to mandate that buyers of firearms attend seminars on safe handling and storage.
“We know that blame for the gun violence epidemic lies with the failure of Congressional leaders to pass even the most basic federal gun laws. Because they have not acted – we have found actions we can take at the county level to protect lives,” Chair Janice Hahn said in a statement.

Monterey Park killer shoots himself, California police look at motive for Asian dance hall killings
Monterey Park should have had a night of joyful celebration of the Lunar New Year. Instead, they were the victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence.
Our hearts mourn as we learn more about the devastating acts of last night. We are monitoring the situation closely.
