Free Twitter Blue Checkmarks for Celebrity Stars, Government Officials and Media Companies Lose Controversial Label

Celebrity LeBron James had vociferously said that he would not pay a monthly subscription for a verified blue tick on Twitter. Other media houses and celebrity stars and personalities also said that they would not pay for verification. Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk have personally paid for some celebrity blue ticks. The platform has also dropped labels for state affiliated accounts, government funded accounts for officials and for media outlets.

Elon Musk has personally paid for verification of celebrity stars including LeBron James, Stephen King and William Shatner, according to a tweet by him. It is well known that Elon Musk has followed the American professional basketball player and his NBA team the Los Angeles Lakers. A media spokesperson for LeBron James confirmed that the basketball legend had not paid for his Twitter verification.

Some of the celebrity stars who still have legacy blue checkmarks on their profiles, as of now although there is no confirmation whether they have paid or not paid include the following:
Taylor Swift
Miley Cyrus
Rihanna
Ryan Reynolds and
Ellen DeGeneres.

Some of the celebrity personalities who seem to have lost the legacy blue checkmarks as of now include the following:
Bill Gates
Christiano Ronaldo
Donald Trump
Kim Kardashian and others.

Elon Musk and Twitter have also quietly made a few more changes. As of Friday morning, personal and official accounts of government officials no longer had labels that identified them as government officials. Some of them who no longer had the label included the following:
President Joe Biden
First Lady Jill Biden
Vice President Kamala Harris.

By removing the blue checkmarks on these accounts, there are concerns that misinformation could be spread through these accounts on Twitter.

On Friday, Twitter also quietly removed controversial labels on media companies. Earlier, it had marked accounts of NPR, the BBC as well as Canadian Broadcasting Corp., with the label “state affiliated.” NPR had announced that it would not use Twitter in its official capacity after the label. This label has also been dropped.
