Several plaintiffs, mostly Black women, are citing research showing a link between frequent use of hair-straightening products and uterine cancer that was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in October 2022.
The American Cancer Society reports,” After an average of nearly 11 years of follow-up, women who had reported using hair straightening products were almost twice as likely to have developed uterine cancer than those who did not, after adjusting for other factors that might affect risk. Women who had reported frequent use of straighteners (more than four times in the previous year) were about 2 ½ times more likely to develop uterine cancer.”
Concerns have been raised about possible links between some hair products and these cancers because some of the chemicals used in hair products might be absorbed through the scalp and have estrogen-like properties in the body. Some hair products might also contain other chemicals that have been linked to cancer, such as formaldehyde.
Previous research from the Sister Study has also linked straightener use with a higher risk of breast cancer.
Strength of Nature, Soft Sheen, L’Oreal, Just for Me, Cantu Beauty, Motions Hair ORS Hair Care (Namaste Laboratories, LLC), African Pride (Godrej Group), Softsheen-Carson (Optimum Relaxer), and Dark & Lovely hair straighteners are allegedly linked to uterine cancer and other health problems, according to chemical hair straightener lawsuits. Manufacturers are accused of failing to alert consumers that their goods may raise the risk of uterine cancer, breast cancer, fibroids, and endometriosis.
The reluctance of these hair product producers and manufacturers to adequately alert consumers to potential health hazards has led to legal action being planned against them. Among the chemicals found in hair relaxer products are:

Cases may now be submitted directly to the MDL, according to Judge Rowland, who oversees this case.
