Idaho Students Murder Update: Police ‘Lookout’ for White Hyundai Elentra Reportedly Seen Near Murder House

Credit Instagram / Moscow PD. Police believe the occupant(s) of the white vehicle may have critical information regarding this case,” police said in a press release Wednesday regarding the November deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Maddie Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and 20-year-old Ethan Chapin

Agents at the US-Canada border are on the lookout for a vehicle seen at the scene of the Idaho roommate massacre last month, in which four college students were brutally stabbed to death by an unknown assailant. Police in Idaho have been inundated with tips as they look for a white car seen near the house where four students were murdered. There have been no arrests or suspects identified in the stabbings.

The Hyundai Elantra was seen near the home on the day of the murders, and its occupants may have “critical information to share regarding this case,” according to police. The FBI is now assisting local police in processing thousands of tips.

Detectives are interested in speaking with the occupant(s) of a white 2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra, with an unknown license plate. Tips and leads have led investigators to look for additional information about a vehicle being in the immediate area of the King Street residence during the early morning hours of November 13th. Investigators believe the occupant(s) of this vehicle may have critical information to share regarding this case.

The four victims – Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, and Mogen Madison Kaylee Goncalves — were students at the University of Idaho in the town called Moscow, Idaho, about 80 miles south of Spokane, Washington. The Hyundai Elantra was seen near the home on the day of the murders, and its occupants may have “critical information to share regarding this case,” according to police.

After receiving numerous tips about the vehicle, Moscow police began forwarding calls to an FBI call center, which the department claims “has the resources to take those calls, categorize them, and send them on to investigators so they can use those tips in the investigation.” It was also reported that US Customs and Border Protection had been tasked with searching for the car at border crossing points between the US and Canada.

To date, detectives working on the case have received over 2,770 tips via phone, nearly 2,700 emails, and over 1,000 “digital media” submissions. The investigation’s slow pace has prompted criticism from some victims’ families, who have expressed dissatisfaction with the police response and a perceived lack of transparency. According to police, “only vetted information that does not impede the investigation” will be made public.

The case has also piqued the interest of tens of thousands of amateur web detectives, with dozens of Facebook groups and Reddit threads dedicated to sharing the latest updates, videos, and pictures from the investigation.  Web Fans  who follow criminal cases are also actively searching for clues online.

Cops have since advised students in the sleepy border town to remain ‘vigilant’ as families gather for fall graduation – despite admitting that they have yet to identify a suspect or determine a motive. After finally seeking outside assistance nearly a month later, the department has been chastised for their so far fruitless search.
