Juan Dixon is out as the basketball coach at Coppin State.

“After fully evaluating the men’s basketball program and performance, we feel a change of leadership is necessary moving forward,” athletics director Derek Carter announced Wednesday in a news release. “We wish Juan and his family the best for the future. We thank him for his time at Coppin.”

Carter said a national search for a new coach will begin immediately.

A Baltimore native, Dixon played at Maryland and led the Terrapins to the 2002 NCAA championship. Following seven NBA seasons, he transitioned to coaching, first as a special assistant to former Maryland coach Mark Turgeon. Then Dixon became the head coach of the University of the District of Columbia women’s team in 2016-17.

Coppin State, in Baltimore, hired Dixon in 2017. He compiled a 51-131 overall record (37-51 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). He never had a winning record in six seasons, and the Eagles finished 9-23 (4-10 MEAC) this past season.

Their season ended with 73-56 loss to Norfolk State in the MEAC tournament last Thursday.

Dixon, 44, also is featured on “The Real Housewives of Potomac” with his wife, Robyn.
