Lead poisoning from hemorrhoid ointment purchased on social media leads to death.

In a case recently reported by California health officials, a lady from Sacramento lost her life after using a hemorrhoid ointment purchased from an online social platform. The ointment, named “Cao Boi Tri Cay Thau Dau,” was procured by a relative in Vietnam and mailed to the United States.

Little did the victim know that this cream harbored a deadly secret: it was contaminated with a staggering four percent lead, thousands of times above the safe limit. Lead poisoning, a severe condition with potentially fatal consequences, wreaked havoc on the woman’s health, leading to her untimely demise.

This incident reminds us of the perils of consuming products of uncertain origin. In an era where online shopping offers convenience at the click of a button, it’s crucial to exercise caution and vigilance. Health officials have warned against using the tainted ointment and urge individuals to dispose of any remaining product immediately.

USAID Administrator Samantha Power emphasized lead poisoning as a significant problem at the World Economic Forum in January 2024 and urged world leaders to invest in remedies. Power emphasized the effectiveness and affordability of a “proven playbook” for managing lead poisoning, focusing on paint, spices, and cosmetics as examples of consumer products contaminated with lead.

Such poisoning poses grave risks to both adults and children. Its insidious effects can range from neurological impairments to organ failure, making it imperative to avoid exposure at all costs.

As investigations continue into this tragic incident, it is essential to safeguard public health.
