Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that it would be dropping its mixed reality headset Quest 3 this fall. The news comes as Apple is getting ready for WWDC in June. Meta said that prices for its new headset will begin from $499.99 on its website while Apple mixed reality sets are expected to cost much, much more. The parent of Facebook, WhatsApp and more also slashed prices of Quest 2, as well. Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement of the launch date, the price drop and more.
Meta Platforms described Quest 3 as “jaw-dropping VR and breakthrough Meta Reality.” The company says that the new Quest 3 headsets would allow users to blend virtual elements into the physical world that surrounds them. It also boasts of 500 titles in its vast library of VR games, apps and experiences for Quest 2 which would be compatible with Quest 3.
According to Meta, its Quest 3 mixed reality headset has a higher resolution and better performance. It incorporates breakthrough Meta Reality technology. Other features include a slimmer and a more comfortable headset. It is powered by a chipset from Qualcomm and will be available with 256GB or 512GB of storage.

The tech giant also said that it wanted more people to “access the magic of VR.” So, it was lowering the price of its Quest 2 128GB SKU to $299.99, and the 256GB SKU to $349.99; to make it more easily accessible for customers.
Meta said that the price would be lowered from June 4. It also announced upgrades for Quest 2, Quest Pro GPU and CPU. These include an increase in speed, smoother game play as well as a better UI.
It will also feature Dynamic Resolution Scaling which will increase pixel density, without dropping frames in both games and apps.
Although Apple is rumored to drop a mixed reality headset during its upcoming WWDC event in June, its headsets are expected to cost much more than Meta Quest ones. Gamers and users might appreciate the quality of Apple’s devices but more users might just migrate to the more reasonable ones offered by Meta.
