Four Americans who were allegedly kidnapped in Mexico on Friday, Latavia Washington McGee, Eric Williams, Zindell Brown, and Shaeed Woodard, were a tight-knit group of friends who traveled from South Carolina to the country for a tummy tuck medical procedure across the border. It is said that they could not reach the medical center to keep their appointment.

Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal revealed that the group arrived in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, at around 9:18 a.m. However, Washington McGee’s close friend, who wished to remain anonymous, claims that they got lost attempting to find the medical clinic. On Friday, they contacted the doctor’s office for directions but had trouble connecting with the office due to a weak cellphone signal.

According to the US source, investigators think that a Mexican cartel, the Gulf Cartel, targeted the Americans because they were probably mistaken for drug smugglers from Haiti. Investigators have reportedly not found any troubling criminal histories regarding the US citizens, the source said.

However, according to a DailyMail article, it cannot be “ruled out” that the four Americans might have a past of “drug trafficking.” The suspected criminal and drug cartel is believed to have kidnapped four Americans in Mexico, and they all have a long criminal history, the outlets reported.

Villarreal stated that one person had been arrested in connection with the incident, but authorities would not confirm whether the person is connected to a criminal organization. The victims were moved to different locations over the course of the days after being discovered in a “wooden house” in Matamoros on Tuesday.

According to US and Mexican authorities, two of the four Americans who were abducted by armed gunmen in the border city of Matamoros, Mexico, on Friday were discovered dead, and two others were discovered alive. Before being turned over to the US government, their remains will first be examined by Mexican officials, the official said. Washington McGee and Eric Williams made it out alive, authorities said. They were brought to a facility in Texas for care and treatment. Officials from the Mexican government reported that Washington McGee was discovered unharmed. Williams’ wife, Michele Williams, revealed that he had been shot once in each thigh.

Brown was reportedly also charged with “possession of marijuana or hashish,” while Shaeed Woodard was accused of “manufacturing and possession” of narcotics and entered a guilty plea. In the past, Eric Williams was apprehended for “distributing crack near a school.” Washington McGee was originally charged with five counts of improper behavior toward a child, a daughter who was eight years old, on March 3, 2016.
