Microsoft gets EU approval for $69 Billion Activision Blizzard Deal

Microsoft (MSFT) began the week with good news as the giant software and hardware company received approval for the acquisition of a popular gaming company from the European Union. On Monday, EU regulators gave a green light for one of the biggest deals in about 20 years. Microsoft can go ahead with its acquisition of video game company Activision Blizzard, after receiving permission for the deal from EU officials after it followed their recommendations.

Microsoft was facing opposition from the EU regulators partly because of cloud gaming that remains a relatively new technology. The Redmond, Washington tech giant agreed to give a guarantee for 10 years. This undertaking by Microsoft would let gamers play titles belonging to Activision Blizzard on cloud gaming services that are being developed by other companies including Nvidia. The video gaming company has popular games including Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and Candy Crush.

The E.U. regulator released the following statement, “These commitments fully address the competition concerns identified by the commission and represent a significant improvement for cloud game streaming compared to the current situation.”

Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft said, “The European Commission has required Microsoft to license popular Activision Blizzard games automatically to competing cloud gaming services.” Smith added that it would apply globally and millions of consumers across the world would be empowered to “play these games on any device they choose.”

Earlier on Thursday, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick spoke of the company’s plans in Europe. Founded in France, the video gaming company, with “deep roots in Europe,” spoke of expansion and investment throughout the EU. The CEO added that the gaming company was “excited for the benefits” that their transaction would bring to “players in Europe and around the world.”

Microsoft is still facing opposition to the deal by both U.S. and British regulators. Although U.S. courts might be more open to overruling antitrust initiatives by the government, the company will face a more uphill battle in Britain. It remains uncommon for upturning verdicts to be given by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in Britain.

According to various reports, an F.T.C. spokesman declined to comment. CMA’s chief executive told the outlet that although the EU had taken a different view, the CMA stood “by its decision.”

Microsoft needs to get approval to acquire Activision Blizzard from both countries as the video game industry is global and interconnected and so is its technology.
