MLB Commissioner Manfred Finally Gets Tough and Threatens to Shutdown Baseball

It was reported on Friday that Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred told MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark that if the sport doesn’t do a better job managing the Coronavirus, it could shut down for the season.

The league and players recognize the coming days are critical following an outbreak among the Miami Marlins in which 21 members of the organization tested positive for COVID-19. Two positive tests by St. Louis Cardinals players Friday furthered concerns inside Major League Baseball about the presence of the Coronavirus and whether the jointly agreed-upon protocols are being followed properly to prevent outbreaks similar to Miami’s.

Should another outbreak occur, Manfred, who has the power to shut down the season, could move in that direction. Multiple players briefed on the call fear the season could be shut down as soon as Monday if positive tests jump or if players continue not to strictly abide by the league’s protocols.

Major League Baseball and the MLBPA on Friday jointly announced the results of COVID-19 testing through Thursday. Of the 11,895 samples taken over the past week, there were 29 positive tests — 20 by players and nine by staff members.

Thankfully only 2 more STL players tested posted. It was first reported as 5 but 3 are staff members. Still not good. The only good thing is that of all the positive tests MLB conducted since the beginning of the season, so far only one person has displayed mild symptoms.

There’s also problems with their testing – one test can show negative and another shows positive, but that’s an entirely different article.

In my opinion, the main issue is MLB has been conducting & structuring their season too widespread across the United States and not a bubble(s) like the NBA & NHL.

Also, the MLB players are big babies. They were given the option of playing in bubbles by the owners, but they turned it down and rejected it because of claims they will not be confined in one place or area without their families & friends. WTF.

They’re getting paid lots of money to play a game. Man up if you really want to get paid & play under safe conditions opposed to complaining about not being around your wife & kids for 2-3 months. Lots of us have been doing that for nearly 5 months! Without pay! The NBA is doing it. The NHL is doing it.

Even the MLS. Our military lives their lives not seeing their families for several months, sometimes years, for little pay, while defending our country & safety of our nation every day, like true soldiers and patriots. MLB players can’t do it for 2-3 months? Why the %#%# not? During a pandemic it’s easy to play “the blame game” yet it’s also difficult to get everyone on “the same & sane page” and the way MLB & the players went about this entire mess was & is insane.

They spent all those months haggling over salaries and arguing over playing more games, and changing rules for the first time in history, to shorten games. Their primary focus should’ve been to protect the players & staffers and the integrity of the game and if they couldn’t & can’t achieve that task, then cancel the damn season and quit complaining.
