MLB News: Logan Webb shuts down Cubs to snap Giants’ 5-game skid

Logan Webb allowed two runs through seven solid innings, and Joey Bart’s two-run homer highlighted a four-run second for the visiting San Francisco Giants, who snapped a five-game skid with Saturday’s 5-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Webb (13-8) allowed a run in each of the first two innings, then settled down and retired 13 straight batters over one stretch.

The right-hander, who has already set a career high for victories, also allowed six hits and struck out six without issuing a walk as the Giants (66-73) evened this three-game set by snapping their third losing streak of at least four games in less than a month.

Meanwhile, Bart recorded three hits while David Villar, who homered in the eighth, and ex-Cub Joc Pederson each had two for San Francisco, which won for just the fourth time in 17 road contests. The Giants pounded out 11 hits, one more than they totaled over the previous three contests.

Webb allowed two runs over his previous three starts combined, but the Cubs (58-81) got to him in their half of the first. Nico Hoerner singled and eventually scored on Ian Happ’s first of two doubles for Chicago, which has lost 14 of 20.

San Francisco, however, answered with vigor in the second against Marcus Stroman (3-7). Pederson doubled against the shift and scored a double by Villar, who ultimately came home from third on a Stroman balk.

With a man on, Bart delivered the big blow when he sent a Stroman pitch well into the left-center-field bleachers for his 11th homer. The Cubs grabbed a run back in the bottom half when Alfonso Rivas (two hits) tripled, and scored on the same play after Villar’s relay throw to third base ended up in the seats.

Stroman, who entered 0-4 with a 6.92 ERA in eight 2022 home starts, lasted just four innings. In addition to the four runs, he allowed seven hits and walked one while striking out four.

San Francisco’s Camilo Doval pitched the ninth for his 21st save.
