MLB News: MLB roundup: Aaron Judge bashes No. 60 in Yanks’ rally

Aaron Judge reached 60 homers when he led off the ninth inning with a drive to the left field bleachers, and the milestone blast sparked a five-run rally that gave the York Yankees a 9-8 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.

Judge joined Babe Ruth (60 in 1927) and Roger Maris (61 in 1961) as the third AL player to reach 60 when he drove a 3-1 sinker about halfway up the left field bleachers. The Yankees won it four batters later when Giancarlo Stanton hit a game-ending grand slam off Wil Crowe (5-10), who also served up Judge’s blast.

Judge took a curtain call for the 430-foot drive, which came after the Pirates had scored four in the eighth off Jonathan Loaisiga and Clay Holmes to take an 8-4 lead.

Bryan Reynolds hit a tying homer in the seventh off Lou Trivino, then gave the Pirates a 5-4 edge with an eighth-inning single off Loaisiga. Rodolfo Castro followed with a three-run homer off Holmes that put Pittsburgh ahead 8-4, but Aroldis Chapman (3-3) tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to set it up for New York’s 15th walk-off win.

Braves 3, Nationals 2

Travis d’Arnaud and Dansby Swanson hit home runs and Charlie Morton pitched 5 1/3 strong innings to lift Atlanta over visiting Washington.

Atlanta clinched a playoff spot later Tuesday when the New York Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers. The Braves have won 10 straight games at home, the longest streak since they set the modern-era club record of 13 straight in 2019.

Morton (9-6) yielded one run on three hits and three walks with nine strikeouts. Kenley Jansen allowed an unearned run in the ninth but still logged his 36th save.

Mets 7, Brewers 5

Francisco Lindor’s seventh-inning grand slam completed a comeback from a four-run deficit as visiting New York beat Milwaukee.

Pete Alonso’s three-run homer in the sixth started the comeback from a 4-0 hole by the Mets, who won their sixth straight game to remain one game behind the Braves in the National League East.

Willy Adames went 4-for-5 and knocked in two runs for the Brewers, who remained 2 1/2 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the race for the third and final NL wild-card spot.

Guardians 10, White Sox 7 (11 innings)

Myles Straw delivered a two-run double in the 11th inning to spark visiting Cleveland over Chicago.

Steven Kwan had four hits, two RBIs and two runs for the Guardians, who scored five runs in the 11th and increased their American League Central lead over the second-place White Sox to five games.

AJ Pollock had three hits, including a two-run homer in the 11th, and three RBIs for the White Sox. Elvis Andrus went 2-for-5 with two runs.

Dodgers 6, Diamondbacks 5 (Game 1)

Austin Barnes belted a two-run home run and Miguel Vargas singled home the go-ahead run during a five-run eighth inning as Los Angeles rallied for a victory over visiting Arizona in the opener of a split doubleheader.

Barnes had three hits for the Dodgers. Reliever Ryan Pepiot (3-0) pitched three scoreless innings before Chris Martin retired the D-backs in order in the ninth for his second save.

Daulton Varsho and Christian Walker homered for the Diamondbacks.

Diamondbacks 5, Dodgers 2 (Game 2)

Drey Jameson gave up two runs over six innings in his second career start and visiting Arizona earned a doubleheader split by beating Los Angeles in Game 2.

Arizona took advantage of a season-high four Dodgers errors to score three unearned runs. Ketel Marte homered for the Diamondbacks, who won for the second time in their last 22 games at Los Angeles. Jameson (2-0) gave up seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Max Muncy hit a two-run home run for the Dodgers, who lost to Arizona at home for the first time in seven games this season. Los Angeles is now 13-4 against Arizona.

Red Sox 5, Reds 3

J.D. Martinez homered, tripled and drove in two runs and Rafael Devers smacked a two-run homer to lead Boston Red over host Cincinnati.

Rob Refsnyder hit the tiebreaking homer in the fourth inning for the Red Sox, who won for the third time in the past four games.

TJ Friedl homered, and Jake Fraley and Donovan Solano each had three hits for the Reds. Cincinnati, which has dropped 10 of its past 12 games, lost Nick Senzel for the season when he broke a toe on a play at the outfield wall.

Padres 5, Cardinals 0

Mike Clevinger became the third straight Padres starter to record a scoreless outing as San Diego defeated visiting St. Louis.

The Padres earned a fourth straight win to strengthen their hold on a National League wild-card berth as both Philadelphia and Milwaukee lost. Clevinger (6-7) gave up three hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright (11-10) allowed four runs on six hits in six innings. Albert Pujols went 2-for-3 with a walk but remained at 698 career homers.

Cubs 2, Marlins 1

David Bote homered to tie the score in the seventh inning and lofted a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth as visiting Chicago defeated Miami.

The Marlins and Cubs — both out of playoff contention — will play the rubber game of this series on Wednesday. Miami won the opener 10-3 on Monday.

Cubs second baseman Esteban Quiroz, 30, made his first major league start and got his first hit, a ground-ball single to center in the first inning. He finished 2-for-3, including a key bunt in the eighth.

Astros 5, Rays 0

Jeremy Pena bashed a three-run home run off ace Shane McClanahan as the Astros fired a second straight shutout of Tampa Bay, winning in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Pena and Jose Altuve each had two hits and a walk as the Astros won for the ninth time in 10 games. Houston starter Cristian Javier (10-9) allowed just one hit in five innings.

The Rays got three hits and two walks from Wander Franco. In his second start since coming off the injured list, McClanahan pitched four-plus innings but was removed after landing hard on a delivery and then shaking his left arm in the fifth.

A’s 4, Mariners 1

JP Sears combined with four relievers on a one-hitter, Tony Kemp blasted a three-run, go-ahead home run, and Oakland stalled visiting Seattle’s pursuit of an American League wild-card berth.

Sears (6-2) gave up Carlos Santana’s second-inning infield single, and it led to a run. He lasted five innings. Joel Payamps, A.J. Puk, Tyler Cyr and Domingo Acevedo each pitched a hitless inning to complete the gem, with Acevedo earning his third save.

Kemp and Nick Allen finished with two hits apiece for the A’s.

Blue Jays 18, Phillies 11

Matt Chapman and Jackie Bradley Jr. each hit a three-run home run and Raimel Tapia also drove in three runs as Toronto defeated host Philadelphia.

Teoscar Hernandez contributed four hits and scored three times, and Alejandro Kirk and Danny Jansen each had three hits and two RBIs for the Blue Jays, who recorded 21 hits.

Kyle Schwarber hit a three-run home run, Dalton Guthrie homered and knocked in two runs and J.T. Realmuto added five hits and two RBIs for the reeling Phillies, who have dropped five in a row. Kyle Gibson (10-7) gave up seven runs on 12 hits in five innings.

Royals 5, Twins 4

Salvador Perez drove in Bobby Witt Jr. with a two-out double in the seventh inning to help Kansas City defeat visiting Minnesota.

The Royals won for the first time this season when trailing by three runs at any point in the game. The Twins, who fell to 6-13 in September, opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning.

Dylan Coleman (5-2) pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the win. Scott Barlow recorded five outs for his 22nd save in 26 chances. Michael Fulmer (5-6) took the loss.

Tigers 3, Orioles 2

Rookie Joey Wentz pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings to set the tone, and Akil Baddoo and Kerry Carpenter homered as Detroit defeated host Baltimore.

Wentz (2-2) gave up two hits while striking out four and walking two. Baltimore starter Austin Voth (5-3) allowed two runs and six hits in five innings.

The Orioles were held scoreless across the first 15 2/3 innings of the series until Gunnar Henderson’s two-run homer with two outs in the seventh off reliever Joe Jimenez.

Angels 5, Rangers 2

Matt Duffy had three hits, including a two-run home run, and Taylor Ward drove in a run, scored twice and had two hits as Los Angeles defeated Texas in Arlington, Texas.

The Angels broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run sixth inning. However, it was the Rangers who had the highlight play of the night, turning a triple play in the same frame.

Rangers starter Cole Ragans worked 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. Dennis Santana (3-8) recorded just one out and gave up three runs on three hits.

Giants 6, Rockies 3

David Villar homered, Austin Slater and Thairo Estrada had two hits each and San Francisco beat Colorado in Denver.

Tyler Rogers (3-4), one of six relievers to pitch for San Francisco, got the win and Jarlin Garcia came on with two outs in the ninth for his first save. Carlos Rodon initially was slated to start for the Giants, but a blister on his pitching hand pushed him back to Friday night.

C.J. Cron homered among his three hits and Alan Trejo had two hits for Colorado. Rockies starter Kyle Freeland (9-10) left after allowing three runs — two earned — on five hits over six innings.
