MLB Yan Gomes goes deep twice as Cubs sweep Phillies

Yan Gomes hit two solo home runs, rookie Nelson Velazquez added his own solo shot with a single and the Chicago Cubs defeated the host Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 on Sunday.

Christopher Morel had a double, single and an RBI for the Cubs, who swept the series and won their fourth in a row.

Cubs starter Drew Smyly gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits over six innings. Smyly (3-5) struck out four and did not allow a walk.

David Robertson allowed two baserunners in the ninth inning but struck out Garrett Stubbs to end the game for his 14th save.

Stubbs homered and singled while Alec Bohm added three singles and an RBI for the Phillies.

Rhys Hoskins contributed two singles and an RBI for Philadelphia.

The Phillies won their final three games on the road against the Miami Marlins before the All-Star break before getting blitzed by the Cubs.

Phillies starter Bailey Falter (0-3) lasted five innings and gave up four runs and five hits to go along with five strikeouts and two walks.

The Cubs went ahead 1-0 in the third inning when Gomes blasted a solo home run to left field. Morel added an RBI double in the inning for a 2-0 advantage.

Gomes hit another solo homer in the fourth for a 3-0 lead, giving him his first multi-homer game of the season. Velazquez added his solo homer in the fourth inning, his third of the series, and the Cubs led 4-0.

Smyly retired the first 14 batters before Bryson Stott doubled with two outs in the fifth. Bohm followed with an RBI single as the Phillies closed within 4-1.

In the sixth, Hoskins ripped a two-out RBI single to left and Philadelphia cut the deficit in half at 4-2.

When Stubbs opened the eighth with a solo homer, his fourth, the Phillies trailed 4-3. Hoskins singled with two outs, but Darick Hall popped out to end the inning.
