Orlando City acquired the No. 2 overall pick in Wednesday’s 2023 MLS SuperDraft from D.C. United in exchange for Brazilian defender Ruan.

Orlando subsequently used the selection on Duke midfielder Shakur Mohammed.

Ruan, 27, tallied four goals and 15 assists in 101 games (91 starts) over four the past four seasons with the Lions.

He signed a contract extension ahead of the 2022 season that runs through the end of 2023.

“Ruan has been an incredibly important member of our project with the Club over the last four years and we want to thank him for all of his hard work and effort,” Orlando City general manager Luiz Muzzi said in a news release. “We wish him nothing but the very best and look forward to seeing all he achieves in this next chapter.”

Ruan originally joined Orlando City on loan ahead of the 2019 season from the Brazilian club Barra de Tijuca.

Mohammed was selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year this season as a sophomore. In two seasons with the Blue Devils, he compiled 13 goals and nine assists in 37 games (35 starts).
