Louisville is hiring alumnus Jeff Brohm as its next football coach, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.

Brohm, the head coach at Purdue the past six seasons, long has been a target for Louisville. He turned down the job in 2019 when Louisville hired Scott Satterfield, and now he is set to replace Satterfield, who moved on to Cincinnati.

ESPN reported that Brohm and the school are finalizing a contract, which is expected to be for six years and in the $35 million range.

Brohm, 51, was born in Louisville and led Trinity High School in the city to a state championship in 1988. He was selected as Mr. Football in Kentucky that season and later named Kentucky High School Player of the Decade for the 1980s.

He went on to play at Louisville, first backing up Browning Nagle in 1990 before starting for two-plus seasons, when he threw for 5,451 yards and 38 touchdowns. He was inducted into the Louisville Ring of Honor in 2006.

Brohm appeared in eight NFL games with San Francisco as he bounced around the league as a backup quarterback with six teams. He then began coaching at Louisville in 2003, starting with the quarterbacks and moving to offensive coordinator in 2008.

He went on to work as an assistant coach at FAU, Illinois, UAB and Western Kentucky before taking over as head coach at the latter in 2014. Purdue hired him before the 2017 season.

With the Hilltoppers, Brohm had a 30-10 record, going 3-0 in bowl games. With the Boilermakers, his record was 36-34, with a 2-1 mark in bowl games.

Purdue (8-5) played in the Big Ten Championship game last weekend, losing 43-22 to No. 2 Michigan. The Boilermakers will face No. 17 LSU in the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 2.

Louisville, 7-5 this season under Satterfield, will meet Cincinnati on Dec. 17 in the Fenway Bowl. Former Louisville wide receiver Deion Branch, the program’s director of player development, will coach the team in the bowl game.
