The BMW sedan features are different from the ones in other car models where drivers have to request for a lane change or agree to one if it suggested by the car, by using the turn signal. In the new model a glance in the mirror, not for vanity but for utility, is enough.
BMW offers an optional Highway Assistance system. The system lets drivers travel long distances on major highways without using pedals or steering wheels. Many other automakers are now offering this feature. So, BMW has added a new vision-based feature that allows drivers to just look at an outside mirror and the car will change lanes.

The new system in the BMW 5-series has a camera mounted behind the steering. This camera monitors the direction in which the driver looks and makes the change in lane, after the car’s automated driving system has suggested a lane change when a car ahead is moving too slowly.
The driver can also make a lane change, even if the automated driving system does not suggest it. The driver can ask for a lane change by tapping the turn signal stalk and indicating the side for changing the lane.
The mounted camera also monitors whether the driver is watching the road all the time. If the driver takes his gaze away from the road, there will be warning flashes inside the car and the system will stop working.
If the system senses that the driver is incapacitated, the car will slow down and stop, and hazard lights will come on automatically.
BMW 5-series sedan will be available from October as both gas powered and electric versions. A hybrid version will be available in 2024.
