New York City requires vaccine proof for indoor dining, entertainment, gyms and more

On Tuesday, people in New York City were asked to show proof of vaccines to enter restaurants, museums, gyms, and other indoor entertainment venues. Two weeks ago, Mayor Bill de Blasio had announced the requirements of vaccination proof for those who wished to utilize indoor public facilities. Customers had to provide proof that they had taken at least one dose of the vaccine.

Many of the restaurants and bars have embraced the move as they wish to keep their establishments open. They remember the pain and losses of lockdowns and do not wish for the return of such measures. They believe that it is better to follow the mandates and keep their businesses open.

Many restaurants and gyms have begun asking for vaccine proof on Tuesday and most of them say that a majority of their customers or members are relieved that they are in a safe environment. However, they say that they have an occasional aggressive customer or member who complains and is non-compliant.

Since the spread of the delta variant, New York City has seen an upsurge in cases. There have been more than 2000 new cases of COVID-19 from the past seven days. In late June, there were about 200 cases per day.

On Tuesday, the city also launched a media blitz where Mayor de Blasio said that approximately 100 vaccine sites will be made available at gyms and other public venues. The city will provide about 600 canvassers to help the process.

After New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco have also mandated vaccine proof, with San Francisco asking those who wish to use indoor public places to be fully vaccinated.

Although all these cities have taken a good initiative to improve and safeguard the health of their residents there has also been a downside as there has been a proliferation of false vaccine cards available via social media or through imports.   Vaccine cards made in China have been seized by Border Patrol agency. Falsifying documents is a federal and state offense and can attract criminal charges.
