New York Homeowner Kevin Monahan Accused of Murder of Woman Who Accidently Entered His Driveway

A man in upstate New York was suspected of shooting a 20-year-old woman to death on Saturday when her companion parked into the driveway of a house they assumed, in error, belonged to a different buddy, investigators said.

According to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy, 65-year-old Kevin Monahan, is accused of shooting at the automobile as the four companions were leaving the residence in Hebron, some 50 miles north of Albany, after realizing they had entered the wrong driveway. After Monahan “fired at least two shots” at the car. One of the bullets struck Kaylin A. Gillis, the victim. She was pronounced dead at the scene not long after the police arrived.

According to a statement from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Kaylin Gillis was found deceased a few miles southeast of the house. Monahan was being detained in the Warren County jail and was charged with second-degree murder. Murphy claimed that Monahan fired two bullets from his porch while the friends were still in the driveway.

Murphy claimed that Monahan fired two bullets from his porch while the friends were still in the driveway. He said that one of the rounds hit the automobile. According to Murphy, there did not appear to be any communication between the group and Monahan prior to the rounds being fired.

He continued that there was “clearly no threat” from anyone in the automobile. Just before 10 p.m. on Saturday, Gillis’ pals called 911 after Monahan is reported to have started firing, Murphy said, alerting authorities to the shooting. The buddies had driven a few miles away to call 911 because the remote region where Gillis was shot had no cell or internet connection, according to Murphy.

When deputies arrived, Monahan, who Murphy described as a laborer and a longtime occupant of the house, was uncooperative, according to the sheriff. Murphy claimed that Monahan had not provided any information to the authorities on his motivation for opening fire. Whether Monahan is represented by counsel is unknown.

The circumstances of Gillis’s death mirrored those of a shooting involving a Black girl who was shot twice by a white homeowner in Kansas City, Missouri, a few days previously, after accidentally rang the wrong doorbell. According to Ralph Yarl’s family and attorneys, the 16-year-old suffered a bullet wound to the head in the incident and is currently in critical condition.
