Early Sunday, The New York Times lost its blue check mark verification badge from its main Twitter account. Earlier, Twitter had said that only users who paid for its subscription service would receive the blue check mark and the others would lose it from April 1. A user told Elon Musk that the NYT would not pay for verification, so Musk removed the check mark. Many other prominent outlets and some celebrity stars also said that they would not pay for the Twitter Blue Subscription Service. It remains to be seen which outlets and celebrity stars lose their blue tick.

According to different reports the following outlets allegedly said that they would not pay for the blue check mark:

The Washington Post
The Los Angeles Times
CNN
BuzzFeed
HuffPost
Business Insider
Politico and others.

Earlier Twitter used to give a blue check mark to accounts that belonged to the media and celebrity stars to avoid impersonation. However, after Elon Musk took over Twitter in October, he said that all users who wanted verified accounts would have to pay a monthly charge.

Some of the celebrity stars who recently said that they would not pay and quit the social media platform include:
LeBron James
Jason Alexander and others.

Last week, the New York Times reported that user accounts such as the micro blogging platform’s top five hundred advertisers and 10,000 organizations who have been previously verified and are the most followed would retain their verification badges.

On Sunday, a user tracking site called Social Tracker reportedly said that the New York Times had more than fifty-four million followers. However, it lost its verification badge. Many of the other outlets, who have said that they will not pay for their verification badge, have not lost the blue check mark, yet.
