NFL News: Giants QB Daniel Jones (ankle) downplays injury after win over Bears

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones briefly departed Sunday’s 20-12 win over the Chicago Bears late in the third quarter due to a left ankle injury.

The Giants said Jones was questionable to return, but when backup Tyrod Taylor took a hit of his own, Jones returned to the game.

Taylor is in concussion protocol, according to the team.

Jones said afterward that he plans to play next Sunday against the Green Bay Packers in London.

“I’m gonna do everything I can to play for sure,” Jones said.

Jones was injured while being sacked by Chicago’s Jaquan Brisker with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. He stayed in for the rest of the drive before being worked on by trainers and getting the ankle heavily taped.

Jones initially wanted to stay in the game but coach Brian Daboll nixed the idea.

“He talked to the trainers, he worked over there on the side, I saw him moving a little bit and he wanted to go and I said ‘You’re not going back into the game.’ You’re limping and I’m not risking you getting injured to try to protect yourself with that limp,” Daboll said. “But if we need you, can you go back into the game? And he said yes. He said, ‘I can go back into the game now.'”

When the Giants got the ball back with 38 seconds left in the quarter, Taylor was in at quarterback in place of Jones.

But Taylor got hurt in the fourth quarter on a play in which he scrambled for 8 yards. A collision with Chicago’s Kyler Gordon caused Taylor to exit. Meanwhile, Jones limped back on the field.

Jones rushed for 68 yards and two touchdowns prior to the injury. He completed 8 of 13 passes for 71 yards.
