James Wesley Henry, 43, was arrested and charged with felony cruelty to animals, police said.
Liesbeth Mackie

An incident involving the murder of a dog has left the community in shock. A North Carolina man was arrested for the brutal killing of a beloved family dog. The incident took place at Weaver Park, where Liesbeth Mackie was engrossed in a game of pickleball while her 11-year-old mixed breed dog, Beignet, was resting on a leash nearby.

Witnesses reported hearing angry shouts moments before witnessing the unimaginable. James Wesley Henry, a 43-year-old man, approached Beignet and violently grabbed her by the throat. Ignoring her owner’s pleas, he proceeded to repeatedly stab and slash the defenseless animal, causing her immediate and tragic death.

The devastating loss has left Liesbeth Mackie inconsolable, unable to find the words to express her grief. Beignet was peacefully lying in the shade, tethered to a long leash, when Henry launched his unprovoked attack. It was Liesbeth’s pickleball partner who alerted her to the horrifying scene unfolding before her eyes.

Eyewitness Eric Hulin, initially in disbelief, watched in horror as the dog suffered. Overwhelmed by a mixture of shock and anger, Hulin, along with another concerned individual, Zen Sutherland, chased down Henry, who was in a disturbed state, muttering incomprehensibly.

James Wesley Henry, 43, surrendered without issue.
Asheville Police

Asheville Police Captain Michael Lamb, in a statement, described the heinous act as a knife attack that effectively eviscerated the innocent dog. Lamb also noted the concerning rise in erratic behavior in the area, speculating that mental health issues and addiction may contribute to such incidents.

The Mackie family, deeply affected by the tragedy, fear for their community’s safety. They believe this crime is indicative of a larger problem in Asheville, expressing concern that the city’s crime rate is spreading like cancer. The randomness of the attack has further shaken their confidence, leaving them to question whether it is safe to bring their pets to public spaces like the pickleball court.

James Wesley Henry has been apprehended and is currently held in the Buncombe County Detention Facility on a $10,000 bond. His arrest on felony ‘cruelty to animals’ charges provides a glimmer of hope for justice.
