A Pennsylvania man, Marc Muffley, was detained by federal officials this week after it was claimed that he attempted to bring explosives on a flight from Lehigh Valley International Airport to Florida in his suitcase. According to a federal complaint, the 40-year-old is accused of two offenses: possessing explosives in an airport and possessing or trying to place explosives or incendiary devices on airplanes.

Muffley will stay in custody until his case is resolved, according to a federal judge who determined that he was a flight risk and a danger to the community. He did not submit a plea at the hearing on Thursday.

Court records state that an alarm went off when bombs were discovered in Muffley’s luggage. Prosecutors revealed that Muffley was instructed to report to the security counter over the airport intercom system, but he failed to do so. Subsequently, security cameras captured him leaving the airport shortly after that and detained him.

The lawsuit claims that as Muffley’s luggage was being screened, a bell informed TSA personnel of its presence. When agents examined the luggage, they discovered a “circular compound about three inches in diameter, wrapped in a wax-like paper and clear plastic wrap concealed in the lining of the baggage, among other items,” according to court papers.

Investigators revealed that an x-ray by a safety bomb technician showed that it contained a powder covered in plastic and was compatible with “commercial-grade fireworks.” The item was identified as “a live explosive device.” A butane can, a lighter, a pipe covered in white powder, a cordless drill, and two GFCI outlets taped together were also found in the luggage, according to the lawsuit.

The Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were informed of the evacuation of the airport’s immediate vicinity, according to a statement from the TSA. The airport remained closed for about two hours.

According to Pennsylvania court documents, Muffley had been charged several times in the past ten years for harassment and minor theft, and possession of controlled substances, among others. Court records revealed that Muffley continued to owe penalties for several court cases as recently as December 2022. Prosecutors made several attempts to have his probation revoked, but it is not known if they were successful.
