Pink diamond sells at Sotheby’s for $49.9Million, breaking world record

The highest price per carat ever paid for a diamond sold at auction was $49.9 million paid for a pink diamond on Friday in Hong Kong.

The 11.15-carat Williamson Pink Star diamond fetched $49.9 million at auction through Sotheby’s Hong Kong for $392 million HKD. The original assessment was $21 million.

Two illustrious pink diamonds are the source of the Williamson Pink Star’s name. The first is the 23.60-carat Williamson diamond, which was given to the late Queen Elizabeth II as a wedding present in 1947, and the second is the 59.60-carat Pink Star diamond, which broke the auction price record in 2017 by fetching a whopping $71.2 million.
