Same-Sex Civil Unions Receive Papal Support

Pope Francis has taken one more step forward to decrease discrimination of the LGBT movement by supporting same-sex civil unions. He wants legal protection for same-sex couples through civil union laws. He said that gay and lesbian people are “children of God and have a right to a family,” and that “ (n)obody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it.” These remarks were made in a new documentary about his life and ministry titled “Francesco.”

Although the Vatican has opposed discrimination and violence against LGBT people, especially the criminalization of same-sex sexual activity, advocates were looking for more recognition of LGBT rights. However, these comments will definitely help protect legal rights for same-sex couples. Many predominantly Catholic countries offer little or no protection to LGBT people and their families and the Pope’s comments may boost support.

Right-wing groups and some lawmakers are trying to disarm LGBT rights in areas like foster care and adoption and the Pope’s remarks can offer a reminder that these discriminated people deserve recognition and respect. The European Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights recognize rights for legal protection and marriage equality for same-sex relationships.
