Southwest Airlines Still in Meltdown as CEO  Warns of More Cancellations

Weary travelers have suffered through the worst series of massive flight cancellations on a holiday season. In particular, Southwest Airlines. The Wall Street Journal reports that, CEO Bob Jordan warned would be “another tough day” as the airline continues to grapple with widespread operational disruptions. “We had a tough day today “In all likelihood we’ll have another tough day tomorrow as we work our way out of this. This is the largest-scale event that I’ve ever seen.” Tomorrow means today, Tuesday December 27, 2022.

According to flight tracker FlightAware, Southwest canceled more than 2,900 flights on Monday at least 70% of its daily program and more than 2,500 flights on Tuesday about    60% of its schedule. Many travelers are  trapped at airports around the nation, many of whom have no idea how long it will be before they can return home or find their luggage.

Southwest had more than ten times as many cancelled flights on Monday as Delta, which had 265 canceled flights, the second-most cancellations of any U.S. carrier. In the previous week, large-scale cancellations were also requested by other airlines. Fans are very upset.

So why does Southwest have the most cancellations? According to the Wall Street Journal,   it’s a  result of the combination of the severe winter storms and the airline’s flight schedules. The pressure of so many recent flight adjustments caused the airline’s crew scheduling system to fail as well.
