Chicago Fire acquire Swiss MF Xherdan Shaqiri

The Chicago Fire announced the acquisition Wednesday of decorated Swiss midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri.

Shaqiri arrives from the French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais for a reported $7.5 million transfer fee, the most expensive transfer signing in the MLS club’s history.

Shaqiri, 30, will occupy a designated player spot and an international roster slot and will wear the No. 10 jersey for Chicago. His contract runs through the 2024 season.

“We’re extremely pleased to formally welcome Xherdan Shaqiri to the Fire,” said sporting director Georg Heitz. “Xherdan is a game-changing player and someone who will bring joy to our supporters and the city of Chicago. As one of the most accomplished Swiss athletes of his generation, Xherdan joins us at a very important time for the Club and fully believes in what we are aiming to accomplish. We look forward to welcoming him and his family to Chicago very soon.”

Shaqiri has won 17 major trophies since making his pro debut in 2009, including UEFA Champions League trophies with Bayern Munich (2013) and Liverpool (2019). He won three straight titles in the German Bundesliga (2013-15) with Bayern and helped Liverpool win its first English Premier League crown in 30 years in 2020.

Internationally, Shaqiri has earned 100 caps for Switzerland’s national team while featuring in three straight FIFA World Cups (2010, 2014 and 2018).
