A 17-year-old honor student was killed by a 14-year-old and a 13-year-old after he offered the suspects a ride home when it was freezing outside. He was returning home from a birthday celebration on February 17.

In Battle Creek, Michigan, at around 12:10 a.m. Jack Snyder was discovered unconscious next to his vehicle after being shot during an attempted carjacking, according to police. In the freezing conditions, EMTs and medical personnel attempted to revive the teen, but Snyder was pronounced dead at the site.

One of the teenagers suspected of being involved has been given an adult charge. According to the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office, Justice Chimner was charged on Friday with felony murder, carjacking, and two offenses involving firearms.

According to reports, the maximum sentence for the murder charge alone is life in prison without the chance of parole. Chimner, according to the prosecution, submitted a “not guilty” plea and was not granted bond. He requested a preliminary hearing, and asked the judge to set a cash bond, according to his attorney, Morgan Pattan. Chimner could face a maximum life sentence without parole.

David Gilbert, the prosecutor for Calhoun County, asked the judge not to set a bond and noted that Chimner had previously tried to steal and sell a gun. Magistrate Amber Straub declined Chimner’s request for a bond after examining the probable cause records.

When Snyder saw Chimner and a 13-year-old boy out in the cold, he allegedly offered them a lift. At that point, according to reports, the suspects allegedly entered the vehicle, attempted to carjack Snyder, who resisted, and then shot him twice. The second juvenile is accused of both carjacking and open murder.

The upcoming hearing for Chimner is reportedly set for March 13.
