Five-star forward GG Jackson, previously ranked No. 1 in the 2023 class by 247sports, has announced a commitment to South Carolina and that he will re-classify to 2022, after recently decommitting from North Carolina.

Eight days ago, Jackson announced on social media his move away from the Tarheels, saying in part, “I have decided to decommit from UNC to explore other options that can help me grow from a teenage boy to an adult.”

The 6-foot-9 rising senior from Columbia, S.C. will now join the hometown Gamecocks this season.

He made the announcement on social media Saturday, saying, “I will like to announce that I will be reclassifying to the class of 2022, committing to the university of South Carolina to further my career and education. NOW LETS HAVE FUN FAMS!”

The Ridge View High School product stood out in tournament play at the Nike EYBL and NBPA Top 100 Camp, earning MVP honors at the latter by averaging 14 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.

He joins a South Carolina team that went 18-13 (9-9 SEC) in 2021-22. The Gamecocks parted ways with Frank Martin in the offseason, hiring Chattanooga’s Lamont Paris.

According to ESPN, Jackson was the first recruit to decommit from North Carolina since J.R. Smith decided to go straight to the NBA from high school in 2003.
