Trump to launch new social network to ‘fight back’ against Big Tech

Trump has been missing social media so much that he is getting ready to launch a new social media platform to take on Big Tech. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more still bar Trump from posting on his banned accounts. Big tech, as he refers to them, decided to take Trump off their platforms after the January 6, Capitol riot. So, he has decided to create a platform where he can communicate with his core base in the nation as well as around the world.

Late Wednesday, Trump said that a new social media platform called Truth Social would be launched by his company–Trump Media and Technology Group. The site was accessible for a short time on Wednesday to people who wanted to create an account and claim usernames. According to the Washington Post one account was created using the handle “donaldjtrump” and it posted a photo of a pig that was defecating.

Trump said that he was “excited” to begin sharing his thoughts on Truth Social and to “fight back against Big Tech.” He said that everybody asked him why didn’t someone stand up to Big Tech and he said that they would soon do so.

In a statement the new company floated by Trump said that it would merge with Nasdaq-listed Digital World Acquisition Corp., which is a special purpose acquisition company or a SPAC. It is created for the specific purpose of buying another business and is also called a blank check company. The merger valued Trump Media and Technology Group at an initial value of $875 million.

The company also announced that it would also offer a streaming service. The content in this platform would feature “non woke’ entertainment programming, news, podcasts and more.”

Truth Social will be launched in beta in November. It will be fully available in 2022. The company did not mention a lunch date for its proposed streaming platform.

This is not Trump’s first foray into starting his own social media platforms. Early this year, he had launched a website called From the Desk of Donald J Trump. It was often referred to as a blog and was shut down within a few weeks as it was unable to attract a large audience. This new attempt is a bigger one from him. He wants to become a popular social media figure, once again, as it seems as if none of the big platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more are going to lift the ban on him, in the near future.
