Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock has won the Georgia runoffs by defeating Republican challenger former NFL player Herschel Walker. This victory gives the Democrats an outright majority 51-49 in the Senate. Earlier, the senate was 50-50 and the tie-breaking vote had to cast by Vice President Kamala Harris, in the session. The Republicans managed to pull off a majority in the House, although it is a slim majority.

The Associated Press called the race in favor of Raphael Warnock 51.4 percent to 48.6 percent. Warnock, who is a senior pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, told supporters that after hard fought campaigns, he was “honored to utter the four most powerful words ever spoken in a democracy: The people have spoken.”

Former University of Georgia football player Herschel Walker, who was an ally of former President Donald Trump and had received his endorsement, said that there were “no excuses in life” and that he was “not going to make any excuses” as they had “put up one heck of a fight.”

Although Warnock was ahead in the November election, he didn’t get the required 50 percent leading to a runoff. He had been projected as the winner by almost all the outlets. His victory in the Deep South is of significance as the Peach State reelected Governor Brian Kemp, who is a Republican as well as Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who is also a Republican.

Former NFL player Herschel Walker’s campaign faced a lot of controversy. He spoke against abortion publicly but privately paid for abortions and was also involved in domestic abuse according to allegations. He was also considered to be a “celebrity” rather than someone who was familiar with the issues facing the state.

Raphael Warnock is a pastor in the church of Martin Luther King Jr. He has spoken of standing together with all the people of Georgia. His victory has been hailed by President Joe Biden, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and others.
