On Wednesday, art gallery owner Shannon Collier Gwin was taken into police custody after the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office issued an arrest warrant for misdemeanor battery in connection with the spraying an unhoused woman with a hose last week. Around 4 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, police arrived at Gwin’s place of business on Montgomery Street in Jackson Square. Gwin was calmly escorted by police to the back of a patrol car.

The misdemeanor battery charge against Gwin was made public by San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins for allegedly “intentionally and unlawfully spraying water on or around a woman experiencing homelessness.” Gwin will be held accountable for his actions, the district attorney said in a statement.

With a no-nonsense approach, Jenkins was initially well received by the people of San Francisco, but in recent months, as crime and violence have increased dramatically, Jenkins has been accused of having ‘soft-on-crime’ policies.

Last week, a viral video showing Gwin spraying the woman with a hose infuriated a large number of people. Gwin has apologized numerous times since the controversy surrounding the incident. Gwin has claimed that despite numerous calls to the city’s social services department to address the woman’s needs, she was still primarily sleeping in doorways. Following that, Gwin apologized for his action via ABC 7.

London Breed, the mayor of San Francisco, stated that the incident reminded her of way the 1960s police had handled civil rights protesters. According to the press release, “the vandalism at Foster Gwin gallery is also wholly unacceptable and must stop.”

Jenkins stated that the victim did not attempt to bring charges against Gwin, but the prosecution chose to move forward with the conviction. After considering all the available evidence and the results of the San Francisco Police Department’s investigation, her office issued an arrest warrant for Collier Gwin.
