Asian-targeted harassment and violence have increased in the US in recent years, particularly since the coronavirus pandemic. An Indiana woman has been arrested and accused of stabbing an 18-year-old college student in the head while they were on a bus, allegedly because the victim was Asian. Hospital staff in Bloomington discovered seven stab wounds on the victim’s head after the initial battery charge against Davis, who could be seen grinning in the mugshot.
After repeatedly stabbing her victim in the head near the Bloomington campus of the University of Indiana, 56-year-old Billie Davis was charged with murder, reports said. Davis was caught thanks to witness accounts. The identity of her alleged 18-year-old victim is unknown.
Police said that the Indiana University student was stabbed multiple times in the head on a bus on Wednesday just for “being Chinese.” According to a statement released on Friday by James Wimbush, the university’s vice president for diversity, “Bloomington was sadly reminded this week that anti-Asian hate is real.”
Davis allegedly admitted to police that she targeted the student for no other reason than race. She allegedly told police that the student “would be one less person to blow up our country,” according to court documents obtained by WRTV. She also admitted having used a folding knife in the attack. According to police, the attack was totally unprovoked.
Police said in a statement that the victim told them she was waiting for the bus doors to open when another passenger started hitting her on the head. The victim and her alleged attacker had no prior contact, according to video taken inside the bus. The name of the student was withheld by the authorities.
According to mayor John Hamilton, Bloomington deplores “any form of racism and discrimination.” It is unknown if Davis will also face hate crime charges.
