Before giving Thaler a life sentence without the possibility of parole, Hennepin County District Judge Jay Quam asked Taler if she had anything to say to them. The mother stated she was innocent and called all of them “garbage.” While Quam was reading out the sentence, Thaler sat back in her chair, her head on her hand, staring at the floor throughout Quam’s reading.
She appeared to give the jury and judge the middle finger as she was led from the courtroom.

Tori Hart, Eli’s father, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Dakota County Social Services for allegedly sending his son back to Thaler despite his worries about her deteriorating mental health and alleged drug use. It is reported that he had repeatedly requested that Social Services not to hand over his son to Thaler because of her mental illness and drug abuse. He was allegedly ignored. His lawsuit will be heard in 2024, reports said.
Eli’s family said they were planning on raising funds for a playground in Eli’s remembrance.
