Days after Senator Raphael Warnock won a Senate runoff in Georgia, giving the Democratic Party a 51-49 lead in the Senate, Senator Kyrsten Sinema left the party and has registered as an Independent in Arizona. She posted her decision on Friday, in a newspaper, a video and a post on social media.

Sinema announced her decision to register as an Independent in the newspaper Arizona Republic. She wrote, “While Arizonans don’t all agree on the issues, we are united in our values of hard work, common sense and independence.”

She also said in a tweet that she was quitting the Democratic Party and was “formally registering as an Arizona Independent” as she wanted “independence from the broken partisan system in Washington.”

Her decision to quit the party and to become an Independent will put the Democratic party back in a position where it would have to make decisions keeping in mind the views of West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, who describes himself as a moderate Democrat. He has played a significant role in cutting down sweeping Democratic bills to more moderate levels.

Kyrsten Sinema has also played a major role in controlling several bills passed by the Democrats in the Senate when she was a member of the party. As an Independent, her control is bound to increase as she no longer has to toe along party lines, although she mentioned that she would not be joining the Republican caucus.

When she was a Democrat, Kyrsten Sinema opposed the raising of individual and corporate income taxes, which would have paid for the sweeping bills the Democrats wished to pass. She diluted some of the legislation and then the bills were passed.

Kyrsten Sinema supported President Biden and the Democratic Party in several key appointments in executive and judicial roles as well as cabinet appointments.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that Kyrsten Sinema had been “a key partner” in some of the legislative accomplishments of President Joe Biden in the past 20 months.
