The XBB.1.5 variety has now accounted for more than 40% of cases in the United States, according to tracking data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the Midwest, however, the prevalence of XBB.1.5 is substantially lower, accounting for only 6% of cases.

Dr. Barbara Mahon, director of CDC’s Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division said, “ . It’s not clear yet where this version of omicron came from, but it appears to be spreading quickly here. There’s no indication it causes more severe illness than any other omicron virus.”
