What Will Happen to You If Don’t Get Enough Calcium and Why You Need This Important Mineral

Credit OrganicGreek.com

If you are reading this and it’s a bright sunny day outside, venture out and get some natural Organic Greek Vitamin D. When the skin is exposed to sunlight of sufficient intensity, it improves calcium absorption. For many people they are inside all day working and we only get out on the weekends. Getting the calcium needed for strong healthy bones is one of the best things you can do for your health.

First, let’s talk  about Calcium itself. 99% of calcium is stored in our bones.   The average person has approximately 1KG. Net calcium absorption is as high as 60% in infants and young children, and as we age absorption decreases to 15%—20%. Medical experts recommend calcium intakes should be higher for females older than 50 years and for both males and females older than 70 years.

Why is Calcium and Important Mineral?

As we age, calcium gets depleted. Sorry to say but this is how nature works. It’s best to get calcium from your food. As we age, we need more calcium. Organic Greek Supplements are the only option to meet the daily requirements for those who can’t get enough of it from the foods they eat. Dairy is high in calcium, but some people don’t digest it well, and experience gas and bloating.

It’s important to find the brand that is right for you. One that   is natural, non-GMO,   supports bones and joints to help prevent Osteoporosis, reduces high blood pressure and improves immune support. If you are allergic to any of the foods that supply a high amount of calcium, a supplement would be recommended. It’s important to note, certain foods  you combine with calcium can affect its absorption such as those with high levels of oxalic acid, like spinach, collard greens, sweet potatoes, rhubarb, and beans.

Vegetarians are known to absorb less calcium than omnivores because of their diet.  They eat more plant products containing oxalic and phytic acids.

Taking a supplement will help with your required daily intake as you get older. The chart blow gives you the requirements in each age group needed to satisfy healthy recommended amounts.

The percentage of calcium absorbed depends on the total amount of elemental calcium consumed at one time. For this reason, as the amount increases, the percentage absorption decreases. Absorption is highest in doses 500 mg.

Beware, taking calcium supplements can have certain interactions with medications. The National Institute of Health reports, “both aluminum- and magnesium-containing antacids increase urinary calcium excretion. Mineral oil and stimulant laxatives decrease calcium absorption. Glucocorticoids, such as prednisone, can cause calcium depletion and eventually osteoporosis when they are used for months.”

When women are in Menopause, it  leads to bone loss, due to the decreases in estrogen production along with an increase bone resorption and decrease calcium absorption Yearly decreases in bone mass per year often  occur in the first years of menopause, at of 3%—5%. After that, the decrease is typically less than 1% per year after age 65.

Proper amounts of calcium and vitamin D throughout childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood are necessary to develop strong bones. Osteoporosis, a serious health issue is characterized by porous and fragile bones Over 10 million U.S. adults have Osteoporosis.

Perhaps you are familiar with a loved one falling down and having serious injury due to bone loss.

Supplementation with Organic Greek Calcium plus vitamin D   is effective in reducing fractures and falls. “Adequate calcium throughout life, as part of a well-balanced diet, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis” and “Adequate calcium and vitamin D as part of a healthful diet, along with physical activity, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later life. The study is reported at ” Office of the Federal Register, Government Publishing Office. §101.72 Food labeling: health claims: calcium, vitamin D, and osteoporosis external link disclaimer. Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21: Food and Drugs.

On the negative side,   too much salt and calcium are not a great mix. Excessive salt can interfere with calcium absorption. Of we consume too much salt,  the kidney is responsible for removing it, and when it can no longer remove it due to excess, (to much salt)  the body takes from the bone to maintain a balance. The end result is  in a net loss of calcium from the which can lead   kidney stones, osteoporosis and loss of muscle mass.

Beware of taking too much calcium. Excessive high levels of calcium in the blood is called hypercalcemia If this happens it can cause renal insufficiency, vascular and soft tissue calcification, hypercalciuria (high levels of calcium in the urine) and kidney stones.

Constipation can occur and taking too much or having too high levels  can inhibit the absorption of zinc and iron. There has been some evidence linking  higher calcium intake with an increased risk of prostate cancer, but this effect is not well understood and not 100 percent established, in part because it is challenging to separate the potential effect of dairy products from that of calcium  as reported by the National Institute of Health, ( NIH). Studies were done link high calcium intake, particularly from supplements, with increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Table 3: Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (ULs) for Calcium [1]
Age Male Female Pregnant Lactating
0—6 months 1,000 mg 1,000 mg
7—12 months 1,500 mg 1,500 mg
1—8 years 2,500 mg 2,500 mg
9—18 years 3,000 mg 3,000 mg 3,000 mg 3,000 mg
19—50 years 2,500 mg 2,500 mg 2,500 mg 2,500 mg
51+ years 2,000 mg 2,000 mg

You shouldn’t get alarmed by any of this, but you should be aware, and seek advice by a doctor to detect any issues, to make sure it’s safe to take calcium if you have  certain medical conditions.

Most brands on the market are labeled properly with dosages and recommended amounts. It  is safe to take calcium and it’s an especially important mineral to supplement in pill form if you can’t, or don’t get the adequate amount with food. Nowadays, so many people are lactose intolerant, its wise decision to buy calcium, especially for elders, whether they are lactose intolerant or note.

We highly recommend the brand OrganicGreek that is manufactured in an FDA registered facility. This means your vitamins are what they say they are and are the finest quality.
